April 2012 - Employment Law Changes

April 2012 has brought some significant changes to employment regulations, which will have an impact upon how employers treat their staff, with particular reference to new staff.

Transforming Local Infrastructure - success for Lancashire

We are delighted to announce that the Lancashire bid to the Transforming Local Infrastructure fund has been successful. The bid will bring £600K of government funding into Lancashire. The aim of the programme is to help support organisations (like Young Lancashire) to become more coherent, efficient, and provide a high quality service.

Positive for Youth (PfY) Partnership funding success

The tender submitted to Lancashire County Council's Targeted Youth Support and Youth Work by Greater Together under the project title 'Positive for Youth (PfY)' has been successful in all areas of Lancashire. The consortium has been awarded £215,986.80 for Targeted Youth Support (TYS) and £170,938.38 for Youth Work for the period 2012-13.

CES Training bursary scheme

Registered charities that are based outside of London in England, and who fall into one of the categories below are now eligible for a bursary to attend a CES training course at our training venue in London. The bursary can be used to attend either a one-day or a two-day course.

Slight recovery in voluntary sector employment

Employment levels in the voluntary sector experienced a slight recovery during the final quarter of 2011 according to latest analysis of the Labour Force Survey. An additional 36,000 employees entered the voluntary sector’s paid workforce between October and December 2011, the latest date for which we have accurate information. This represents an increase of around 5% on the previous quarter and takes the sector’s workforce to a total of 759,000 individuals (2.6% of total UK employment).

International Volunteers

Raleigh International Citizen Services Places is looking for volunteers for its new overseas opportunity. Raleigh International Citizen Service (ICS) is open to UK citizens aged 18 or over. ICS brings young people from different countries together to fight poverty. Volunteers will spend 10 weeks on an overseas community placement in India or Nicaragua and could be out as early as this summer. Raleigh has 36 places available for this summer and is encouraging volunteers to apply as soon as possible.

Most charities reduced labour costs in 2011, Charity Finance Group survey finds

Most charities took steps to reduce their labour costs in 2011, according to a survey of finance professionals by the Charity Finance Group.

Aspirations and education

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published The role of aspirations, attitudes and behaviour in closing the educational attainment gap. The research, which includes three reports, challenges the view that raising aspirations and changing attitudes to school are a key way to improve attainment of poorer children. The research confirms that most young people (and their parents) attach great importance to education and want to go to University or to attain professional, managerial and skilled jobs.

International Citizen Service

Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell has launched the International Citizen Service (ICS) scheme. The government-funded programme will send 7,000 young people from the UK over the next 3 years to work in partnership with young people in developing countries, on projects to fight poverty where help is most needed. The scheme follows a pilot year in which over 1,000 young people participated. ICS is led by VSO, in partnership with Restless Development, International Service, Raleigh International, Tearfund and Progressio.
